A female suspect, Mary Paul, aka Blessing, a housemaid, has confessed to how she conspired with her boyfriend, Victor Egberem, to rob her employer, Prof. Abiodun Oluwole. Mary revealed that the 76-year-old Prof. Oluwole, a former lecturer in the Obafemi Awolowo University, employed her in March 2014.
According to her, she planned with her boyfriend, Victor, an applicant, to rob the victim and on Sunday, 13April, they struck at about 1:30p.m at the victim’s residence in Marwa Garden, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, while the man, whose family resides abroad, was watching a football match.
She said the professor was shocked when an unknown young man burst into his room with a kitchen knife, rope and cloth and threatened to stab him if he failed to cooperate. Mary said her boyfriend then used the rope to tie up the victim and used the wrapper to blindfold and gag him, after which they ransacked the house and removed $3,000, 120 pounds and N20,000 cash, three iphones valued at 360,000 and one Apple ipad valued at 120,000.
According to her, they thereafter escaped from the house, leaving the victim in critical condition. Mary said she later called the man’s driver and informed him that robbers had attacked their master and that she had escaped from the house.
The driver reported to the security man at the estate, who reported the matter at Alausa Police Division, from where a team of policemen was dispatched to the house to rescue the man who was now almost dead. He was taken to a hospital where he was revived.
When the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, got wind of the matter, he ordered that it be transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and ordered the Officer-in-Charge of SARS, Abba Kyari (SP), to fish out the robbers. SARS tracked Victor and arrested him and recovered the ipad and two iphones from him while his accomplice, Mary, was arrested at Ogijo in Ogun State.
Mary’s confession:
Tell us about yourself?
I am Mary Paul, 25, from Ogoja in Cross River State. I’m a nurse, an auxiliary nurse. I trained at Atewerala Hospital in Ikorodu and I live at 2, Babatunde Street, Ogijo.
How did you come about doing the job of house help?
My boyfriend called me to come and do house help for the professor. He knew him through an agent who gives employment. I was then working at Ejire Clinic, Oshodi-Oke, Ogijo in Ogun State. He told me that I should work with the man and be stealing money for him. I started work on March 8, as house help with N15,000 salary, free food, free accommodation and medical care. The man promised to send me to school of nursing if I took the work seriously. I have worked for only one month. I did what I did because of love. I have been dating my boyfriend for two years. I have a daughter; her father is from Edo State. He is Peter Mathew. I gave Blessing, as my name, to the professor, as I came through an agent called Sunday.
How did you plan and execute the robbery?
That day, the professor and I came back from Akure. My boyfriend used to call me to ask if the professor had money. When we came from Akure, I discovered that prof. had money and I called my boyfriend. When he came, he asked me what we could use to threaten him. I gave him rope. He collected knives from the kitchen. He took a cloth and entered the prof’s room. I was in the sitting room. After the operation, he came out and we escaped. He told me to call the Prof’s driver to tell him that robbers had attacked our house. I told him (driver) to go and release the professor, that I have escaped from the robbers.
He collected N20,000 and six pieces of 20 pounds and changed it to N30,000. He gave me the N30,000 as my own share.
He gave me one iphone. I did not know he collected dollars. I sent all the N30,000 to my mother in the village. Both of us escaped to my boyfriend’s sister house in Bariga, from where I moved to Ikorodu the following day.
How do you feel now?
I feel stupid and guilty, I still love him, God will forgive him. He is a driver.
Victor Egberem’s confession:
Tell us about you?
I’m 29 years; I’m from Ogoja in Cross River State. I met my girlfriend in Ikorodu, Lagos. I was then working in a processing company. It was devil’s that made me to send her to steal. Where she was working before, she was being paid N9,000.
Why did you send her to work for the purpose of stealing?
I sent her to rob because that was what our people used to do. We send our girlfriends to do house help in order to rob. I did not target any amount.
What did you take from the house?
I collected one ipad, one US phone, two iphones, 120 pounds, N20,000. I did not see dollars. They did not ask me anything at the gate. My girlfriend opened down the entrance door for me. I did not use gun. I used only kitchen knife. When I confronted the professor, he did not resist.
I have the intention to marry Mary.
